Unique Multi-Wave Calcite from Cave-In-Rock, IL

Chris Clemens

This calcite was mined by the Griffith family in 2017 from their private commercial specimen mining operation located in Hastie's quarry in the Spar Mountain area near Cave-In-Rock, Illinois. Under long wave UV the calcite shows a beautiful rich orange fluorescent response, and a similar, but dimmer response is seen under short wave UV. This piece really comes to life under mid wave UV, showing bright pink/magenta fluorescence. The size of this specimen is 70.0 x 59.5 x 54.0 mm, and it weighs 232 grams.

There are also clusters of small, cubic, dark purple colored fluorite crystals on this specimen, but they are not fluorescent.

Nature’s Rainbows is a non-commercial website for the hobby community.  It is maintained entirely by volunteer hobbyists and contributors.  Our mission is to provide information about UV and luminescence, premium fluorescent mineral photos, and a fluorescent mineral database for the enjoyment of FL mineral collectors around the world.  Information on this web site is covered under a Creative Commons License.
