Fluorescent Poker Chip Calcite from Russia

Chris Clemens

This is a large specimen of milky white to light pink, stacked, poker chip calcite crystals on a bed of massive pink calcite, from Russia. This specimen shows a beautiful, saturated, red/orange fluorescent response under all UV wavelengths, but shows subtle variations in fluorescent zoning and intensity dependent on the wavelength. The brightest fluorescence is seen under mid wave UV. The size of this specimen is 12.0 x 10.0 x 6.6 cm, and it weighs 836 grams.

Fluorescence under short wave UV (254 nm).

Fluorescence under mid wave UV (302 nm).

Fluorescence under long wave UV (365 nm).

Same specimen shown under visible light.
